Winner: Best Response From A Volunteer Category

by Jeff Suever on Jun.08, 2009, under Uncategorized

One of our A/C package units has corrosion on the bottom inside. Originally our Building and Maintenance Committee thought it could be sealed from inside the unit. Turns out the unit will have to be raised off the roof, a sheetmetal pan made, the curbing the unit sits on will need to be extended and then the whole thing will need to be plumbed and rewired back in. I sent the $1,800 quote from our A/C contractor to our volunteer Building and Maintenance Committee and received the following:
“Let’s take a look at it, figure out how many hours it may take us, double that figure, then decide if we want to do it ourselves.”
Hilarious.

Shameless Plug Friday – June 5

by Jeff Suever on Jun.05, 2009, under Church IT, Ministry, Study

1. AccessACS running inside Facebook. I could write a post about this. Or I could just suggest you go check out Matt Irvine’s post. Either way, you are going to want to see this.
2. Andy Andrews book The Noticer. A full review is forthcoming, but suffice it to say, this book is full of axioms. What is an axiom? An axiom is a short sentence that defines action or direction. Like a cliche only with real value.
3. Documents to Go for Android. This is my first paid app. However, this gives me full functionality of Word and Excel documents in my phone. Including Word/Excel 2007. All of the normal functions I use in Word/Excel on the desktop are here. Working on functions, freezing and unfreezing panes, separate sheets in Excel. Bulleted lists and formatting in Word. There will be a free upgrade that will include PowerPoint as well as a pdf viewer. And yes, copy and paste.
Currently, if someone emailed me a doc to my Gmail address, I could open it in Google docs. Same thing with pdf. Now, no matter which address it goes to, I can open it PLUS I have full editing, saving capabilities. Almost makes me wish I took the bus to work.
4. Volcano Burrito from Taco Bell. This thing will light you up. LOVE IT!!

C.S. Lewis-The original twitterer

by Jeff Suever on Jun.01, 2009, under General, Ministry, Time management

I’m not making light of a tragic situation, but in case you are not aware, C.S. Lewis lived his life a confirmed bachelor. That was until he met his wife Joy late in life.
Shortly after they were married she was succumbed to cancer and passed away. So great was Lewis’ sorrow that he could not express it. His only respite was to keep a notepad on a table. Everytime a thought entered his head he would jot it down. And then move on. This chronology became the book “A Grief Observed.” The progression of emotions is real and plainly evident. It is impossible to read this book without emotionally walking the path with the author.
Were he alive today, Lewis might have tweeted those short thoughts. Those observations of grief.

Twitter can be inane- “Went to the bathroom. Out of toilet paper again.”
Twitter can be an incredible time sink- “I need to know what each of the 237 people I am following are doing. Every three minutes.”
But, if you consider your audience, and take stock in your life-at this moment right now- you might find something that is of value to others.

Lewis put his grief out there, but he was willing to do that only because he lived it and it was real.
Live life. REALLY live life…only then will you have something to tweet about.
